Your Own Breeding Box

A
breeding box is a solid box in which to inseminate cattle.
The basic idea behind the enclosed breeding box is that
the cow confined to a dark and quiet box cannot see an escape
route, in turn standing still. No portion of her body is
restrained (no head catches or squeeze chutes) so, she doesn t
fight the box. A breeding box greatly reduces the stress
on both the cow and inseminator, which greatly increases
A.I. success. The basic dimensions for the box are all you
need and they can be modified to suit your own situation.
While large cows will fit through the 26 inch width, the
box can also be narrowed for smaller heifers by bolting
2 x 6 s along the inside.

A. Overall
length of box is 11 feet by 6 inches.
B. Piece
of tarp or rug hangs down 2 feet to keep front of box dark.
Solid roof back 4 feet from front - then open or at least
hinged in case two animals push into box.
C. Box
is 6 feet high and 26 inches wide.
D. Last
hole is back 90 inches to put pipe behind large cows.
E. Front
hole is back 60 inches to put pipe behind heifers.
F. Pipe
slides through 2 to 3 inch holes behind cattle to keep cows
from backing up. Holes should be 25 inches from floor.
G. Solid
front door swings out to let cow out, as little light as
possible should enter around the front door.
H. 26
inch solid side door swings in and latches to prevent next
cow from entering the box. If top door jam is used make
it 1 inch taller that the tallest inseminator!
