How did you get involved in the AI industry?
“My family was not dairy oriented at all, but I had an unspeakable love for cows from a young age. I grew up across the street from a dairy and I still recall sitting on my front porch watching the cows graze in the pasture. At age 14, the dairy farmer across the street offered me a job to feed his cows and I took it in a heartbeat. One day, I asked him if I could learn how to milk cows and two weeks later, that’s what I was doing! Several years later I took the opportunity to attend an A.I. training school where I learned how to breed cows and that’s when I became interested in genetics. Eventually, I was hired by Lloyd Vierra and Tom Olson, who were distributors for Superior Sires at the time. I started out as a Select Mating Service Evaluator and then worked my way up to the sales representative position that I am in now. Being hired by this company changed my life.”

Describe a typical day in your life on the job.
“I get started early because most of my clients are near the barn at that time. I fill nitrogen tanks, deliver semen, visit with the dairymen, and make sure everything is good. I am very fortunate that the majority of my clients rely on me to choose their bulls, so most of the decision making is up to me. Once I find out what they want, I check in with the dairymen and make sure they are satisfied with the bulls I’ve selected.”

What is your favorite part of your job?
“It’s a fantastic job. My favorite part is the people. Working with dairymen who are just down-home honest people is fun! I don’t even really consider it a job!”
