Select Synch
A new method for synchronizing estrous in all cows is to administer a gonadotrophin releasing hormone (GnRH) injection followed one week later by an injection of PGF. This protocol will also initiate estrous cycles in some anestrous cows. All animals are observed for signs of estrous for six days beginning the day before PGF and continuing for five days afterwards. Only about 8% of the cows exhibit estrous up to 36 hours before injection. The peak estrous response will be two to three days after the PGF injection. These early heats are fertile heats and cows should be bred. Some success has been reported by producers who have painted the tailheads of cows with paint sticks and bred cows that were missing their paint when they were gathered for the PGF injection. The PGF injection is not necessary in cows that have already exhibited estrous, but will not cause any harm either. Timed insemination is not recommended for this protocol without an additional injection of GnRH. The major benefits of the Select Synch protocol are the simplicity of the program and the ability to induce fertile estrous cycles in some cows that are not yet cycling. This protocol has resulted in higher pregnancy rates among cows than the traditional protocols. However, it has not yielded as high a pregnancy rate among heifers as the MGA/PGF protocol and at this time is not recommended for virgin heifers.
