MGA¨-Select
The MGA¨ - Select System superimposes the MGA¨-PGF heifer
program with the Select Synch protocol and is "the method of choice"
for postpartum beef cows. Advantages include: "jump starting" anestrous
cows, presynchronizes cycling cows for optimum response to GnRH, tightens synchrony
of estrus, and eliminates most "early heats". The level and consistency
of estrus response, conception and pregnancy rates to MGA¨ - Select is unmatched
by any other protocol to which we have compared. Fixed-time AI at 72 hours post-PGF
has also produced very acceptable pregnancy rates (45-50%) though less than what
can be expected if animals are inseminated to standing heats 5 to 7 days (55-65%).
Notes: MGA¨ is not approved for use in lactating dairy cattle. Results using
GnRH-based synchronization protocols in virgin heifers tend to be variable and
in general, are not
recommended.
